State of Emergency Info / Meteor Shower Info / CS Class Information

Hi People,

As the Thomas Fire continues to grow and affect residents of the Ventura and Santa Barbara County in different ways, we can take this time out of class to be with family, learn about the natural disaster that is happening around us, and keep busy with tasks that we don't normally have time to focus on.  Also, finish your class projects!

Meteor Shower Tonight! - The Geminids Meteor Shower is peaking TONIGHT!  Since we are out of school, you will be able to catch a glimpse of some shooting stars (meteors) tonight after 9 pm.  Get your blankets, chairs, and hot chocolate ready!  Please look below for more information.

Class Projects - If possible, work on your class projects!
P2, 5, & 6 - Project ID - Finish up creating your ID tags and Bag Pins (for 2nd-year students).  Remember to figure out the size of your project using millimeters.
Remember, no square or circles with names on them.  Create cuts and unique shapes to make your project special.

When done, try some coding at https://code.org/learn
You can try any of the projects on this page.  If you are new to coding, try the easier projects.  If you are comfortable with coding, try a challenging task.  Post on your blog examples of the coding projects your worked on and include some screenshots of your coding!

P4 - Podcasting - Task details

  • create, record, edit, & post 2 podcasts
  • post on class padlet & your personal CS Blog padlet
  • start brainstorming ideas for your next podcasts.  We'll work on recording at least 2/month
  • Post a reflection on your blog titled "Podcasting"  Reflect on creating a podcast, how you created it, and potential uses for the skills you are using.

Fire Related Information - I have included links to information about the fire in our county.

FOR UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION REGARDING THE THOMAS FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCIES IN VENTURA COUNTY, PLEASE GO TO
This is a great video explaining fire science in Southern California.  It speaks about fire dangers in SOCAL and how we can live with fire and protect our living spaces.  Lots of great information!

Hi all,

Here are your plans for Friday.  Your guest teacher will be Mr. Juarez.  Please show respect to your teacher today.  Use your time wisely.  Make sure to post a "What’s Up" post but take no more than 10 minutes to complete it.

Basic Plan all Periods

    1. Create at least 2 & up to 4 different tags of different styles
    2. Each ID tag needs to have a first name (nickname & last initial are ok but no last name)
    3. The design must have some artistic quality and cannot be a basic shape (square, rectangle, circle) without modification.  You can start with these shape but you need to change it, cut it, modify it.
    4. Printing of projects will start on Tuesday after checking project with Mr. G
    5. All students should be ready for teacher check starting Wednesday.
    6. Post image and reflection on blog by next Friday.
  6. P4 - Podcasting - students will be creating, editing, publishing, and posting their first two podcasts.  Some students are collaborating but noise levels in the classroom MUST be between a level 1 & 2.  Respect those who need quiet in order to record.
    1. Continue recording your podcast
    2. Post your finished podcasts on the class blog padlet named “Podcasting Pandemonium”
    3. When you are done, listen to some of the other podcasts.
  7. 35 min - Work on projects - detailed above
    1. Guest teacher - Students may be collaborating which is encouraged.  Or, they may be just visiting so you will need to move around the classroom and listen into conversations.  THIS IS CRUCIAL FOR GOOD CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT!!!!!
  8. Done with Project - Students can do these activities when complete with project and posting on their blog
    1. DIY ACTIVITIES
Blogger
Modify your blogs themes, colors, and layout

Reminders:
  • Write good, detailed, and readable reflections.
  • Email me if you have any question.
  • Collaboration is helpful, socializing is distracting - Know why you are out of your seat and it cannot be to socialize.

I wish you all a good day.  See you tomorrow!

My First Blog Post and Keyboarding Test

These are my first keyboarding scores in Computer Science class.  The first I took, I keyboarded the way I normally do.

This one I took using 10 fingers and it is very slow because I am just learning how to use 10 fingers on the keyboard.
I am going to learn how to keyboard without looking at the keys and using all 10 fingers.  My goal for my grade is ______

Drones to the Rescue

In this project, students had the task of assessing a disaster area using a rolling drone.  After evaluating the damage, they dispatched aerial drones to deliver supplies to survivors.  Rolling drones were coded to navigate through obstacles using either FreeFllight Jumping software or Tynker block coding.  Aerial drones were flown using FreeFlight Mini software on student phones.
